Harold Monks’ photo album

New to my website — a digital photo album of early 20th century Clayoquot Sound! My grandpa Harold Monks (1892–1974) was a long-time resident of Tofino and Clayoquot Sound. Harold settled on Vargas Island in 1914, with the intention of ‘ranching’. This was not to be. He soon turned to commercial fishing for the Clayoquot Sound Canning Company at Kennfalls. After service overseas in WWI, Harold made his home in Tofino, fishing in the summers, and working on the Tofino life boat in the winters. Harold captured scenes from his work and social life in a old-style photo album — black pages with captions hand printed in white pencil. I have uploaded photos from Harold’s photo album and also images from original negatives (these were scanned and digitized 10 years ago). You can click on the individual photo to read the captions.
